Training Salary Survey 2008: The Buck Stops Here

Average trainer salaries jump nearly $5,000 to $86,450 in 2008. How do you stack up?
Though we've been teetering on the brink of a recession for more than a year, salaries for training professionals actually increased nearly $5,000 to $86,450 in 2008, according to Training magazine's Annual Salary Survey of 751 readers. On average, respondents said the last salary increase they received was 4.27 percent in the last 12 months (not including a promotion or change of employer).
All regions were up except for the North and Southeast, with the Central area showing the biggest increase (9 percent). The transportation/utilities, educational services/academic institutions, and government/military industries jumped the most, rising between $4,000 and $7,000 each. Health/medical services, consulting, and training suppliers dipped slightly. Executive-level managers (CEOs, CLOs, CIOs, etc.) also took a hit, falling from $131,704 in 2007 to $118,708 in 2008.
Likewise, executive-level training/HRD managers saw their salaries drop from $113,042 in 2007 to $106,267 this year. But there was good news for independent consultants, who raked in $24,000 more in 2008, while management/career/organizational development specialist and personnel manager/specialist salaries rose $13,000 and $8,000, respectively.
Nearly 40 percent of respondents feel their salary is low relative to their responsibilities, while more than 50 percent say it's equitable. The average cash bonus received in 2007 was $14,584. Some 55 percent of respondents expect to receive a cash bonus in 2008.
